Audible is an Amazon company that provides  books which can be downloaded to your MP3 player, computer, iPod, iPhone, iTouch, iPad, Blackberry or Kindle.  Yes Kindle.  And not just books.  Podcasts, newspapers (like the Wall Street Journal), magazines, radio, TV and original content.  Type in a keyword and then sort the results by best sellers, customer rating, release date, length, price, author or title.

iPhone and Verizon?

Orders can be placed on February 3rd, delivered February 10th.  So are you thinking of switching?  Here are some things you will want to consider before you make the transition.

  • Do not cancel service with AT&T until you have initiated and obtained new service from Verizon.  If you do, you may lose your old number.
  • Consider data plans available on Verizon.  They have not specifically listed iPhone pricing.  Based on Smartphone plans, Verizon does offer an unlimited data plan for $29.99.  AT&T provides almost unlimited bandwidth at the same price.  For reference, 10gb represents the combination of all this activity: 250 emails per day,  50 web pages viewed daily, 30 minutes of streaming video each day and 50 photo uploads daily. It's actually quite a lot of activity.  Make sure you check the plan options before you sign a two year agreement.
  • Text messaging costs as much as $.25 per text unless you have a $10 or $20 per month plan which allows 500, 5,000 texts respectively.
  • Verizon does not have roll-over minutes. NONE!

So don't jump ship blindly (as much as you might want too).  Verizon will play this to their advantage. But, then again, that might just be worth the additional cost.

Who Mails a Letter Anymore?

I don't.  Sometimes I send cards (Send Out Cards).  I rarely, if ever, send letters or anything else via US Mail. I much prefer to communicate via the Internet in any number of ways.  But, if you still find it necessary to communicate with that one special person left in your rolodex that requires a letter to be delivered by the postman, then I have the solution for you.  www.mailaletter.com.

It really works!   You can draft a letter on-line or upload a Word document, text file, RTF or PDF and it will be printed, placed in an envelope, stamped and given to the United States Postal Service where it will be hand carried from origin to destination and delivered to the person to whom it was sent. Remarkable.

For a meager $.99 for the first page and $.25 per page thereafter INCLUDING postage you can quickly and easily send invoices, correspondence, documents, whatever via US Mail.  It's so cool, you'll hardly believe your eyes.  And if you forgot if you mailed something?  Just log into your account and review your, get this, Mailbox.  It will display the letters you have sent.  Forgot what you said in your letter?  No problem!  Just click the magnifying glass and behold, your letter is displayed before your eyes.

OK, so I don't use the service very often, but when I do, it's a wonderful experience.

Steve Jobs Taking Leave of Absence

Steve Jobs, the Founder and CEO of Apple announced yesterday that he would be taking an indefinite leave of absence to focus on health issues at least until June.

If you recall, he suffers from Pancreatic Cancer and had a liver transplant in 2009.  Although it was not stated, it is suspected that is the reason for his announcement.  His absence will have a resounding impact which has already begun.  Although the markets closed in the US before the announcement, we saw a decline in Europe of almost 10% in Apple stock.

What does this mean for Apple?  Steve Jobs has certainly been the catalyst pushing Apple forward over the past few years.

We wish him well and hope that he finds the good health he seeks.
