It is a very powerful tool and worth your review. Click below to set up a free account.
Audible is an Amazon company that provides books which can be downloaded to your MP3 player, computer, iPod, iPhone, iTouch, iPad, Blackberry or Kindle. Yes Kindle. And not just books. Podcasts, newspapers (like the Wall Street Journal), magazines, radio, TV and original content. Type in a keyword and then sort the results by best sellers, customer rating, release date, length, price, author or title.

Morning Exercise
I don't know about you, but it is very apparent that a morning exercise program must be part of my days the rest of my life. And how do I hate it, let me count the ways. But without it, I can readily see that my days will be fewer. So it is off to the gym at 5 A.M.Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and something else Tuesday and Thursday. Weekends are left to bust a gut around the house. But what do you do everyday for your mind? What helps you develop that giant muscle in your head. Well here is something you might try. Write. That's right, just write. Every morning, sit down and write 3 pages of whatever drivel comes out. It doesn't need to make sense, it just needs to flow. Write as fast as you can and pretty soon, after just a few minutes, the thoughts will come from deep within. It sounds a bit transcendental, but it works. It helps clear your brain by unloading. Not just a to do list, but content. Some of which you didn't even know was there.
Bring on the technology. So I stumbled upon a web site that challenges you to do this every day and rewards you if you do. It is www.750words.com and it is really interesting. Now I probably write a couple thousand words a day in emails, letters and other work related content. But I have never really sat down and just written for the sake of writing. It is really interesting and this web site makes it even more interesting. After you have completed your 750 words, you are rewarded with a graphic analysis of your mood and emotions that day. It graphically charts you for that day and if you wish, all days on average. It will also compare you to others participating in the same mental exercise. If you have any writing desire at all, try this out. If you have another way of unloading your brain and exercising your mind, please share it. |
Amazing Creatures
Did you know that hummingbirds migrate as much as two thousand
Yup, this one is mine!
 | miles? Hard to believe these little gems work so hard to stay warm but this one (a female ruby throated) will head to Mexico pretty soon - at 27 miles per hour.
Did you also know that percentage wise, they had the largest brain of all birds (4.2% of body mass).
Put up a feeder in your back yard and you will enjoy activity akin to Logan Airport with take-offs and landings every couple of minutes - although these guys are more like fighter jets. Make sure you put it up next year as well, because the same birds are likely to be back looking for the feeder! |

 | results in differing amounts. Which works out better for the carrier? Here are 3 examples. In ALL cases, it works out better for the carrier to discount the rate first. It is pennies on every transaction, but might result in hundreds or thousands of dollars over time. The example shows 3 shipments of different weights and different rates. The discount applied to each shipment is 66%. Discounting the extension versus discounting the rate always results in a lesser amount. It is because applying a discount to a lessor amount (the rate) results in a smaller discount then applying the discount to the larger amount (the extension). |
Why Do We Do What We Do?
I just listened to a talk by Simon Sinek recently. He discusses a powerful model for success. A friend of mine, Jon Cordas, PhD. shared it with me this past month and I found it eye opening and inspirational. Listen for yourself when you have 20 minutes. Click here for the TED talk or click here for Simon's web site or order his book Start With Why from Amazon.
It's all about WHY you do what you do and getting your management, employees, customers and vendors inspired and on the same page. It is what sets some people and businesses apart from others. It's why Apple Computer is so successful regardless of economic conditions. Apple wants to create the neatest, sexiest toys on the planet. It is at the center of Apple and permeates everything they do. It's why Disney, although not immune to economic conditions, is the most profitable entertainment company in the world.
Why does Disney do what they do? To make people happy. That is at the center of Disney and permeates everything they do. Sometimes it's eluded to in a tag line. GE brings good things to life. BMW the ultimate driving machine. American Express, don't leave home without it. TRI makes things better because we can. But they don't really tell us why. Why do we do what we do. Because we can. A little bit. Because we love writing software - nope, that's not it.
We really like to solve problems successfully. It is all about pride and accomplishment. The real reason we do what we do is how it feels. When someone tells us what the problem is. Not what they want, but what their problem is. We put on our collective thinking caps and innovate a solution. When we show our client what we created, we are looking for the exhilaration, the WOW moment. When our client calls in someone else and says, hey look at this. Is this slick or what.
In everything we do, we want to be the hero. It's why we work so hard. It's why we look for new projects. It's why we spend more time trying to solve problems then our competition. It's more than a job for us. It's pride. It's creation. In a way it's ART. And it's personal.
