Read Books? Better yet Listen...

I know, you all went out and bought a Kindle or an iPad to read your books.  So did I.  But how can you read while you are driving? Exercising? Walking? Resting? Well, it's simple.  Listen.  Thanks to a friend of mine; Mike Preston; Investment Advisor at New Harbor Financial Group (www.newharborfinancial.com); I have become an avid subscriber to www.audible.com. It's been around since 1997, but it's new to me.

Audible is an Amazon company that provides  books which can be downloaded to your MP3 player, computer, iPod, iPhone, iTouch, iPad, Blackberry or Kindle.  Yes Kindle.  And not just books.  Podcasts, newspapers (like the Wall Street Journal), magazines, radio, TV and original content.  Type in a keyword and then sort the results by best sellers, customer rating, release date, length, price, author or title.

Not sold?  How about story books for the kids in your life that have synchronized images that you can watch on your iDevice.   Yes, Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears is available with synchronized images.

Are you feeling different about nature?

I am not sure if it is the BP catastrophe in the Gulf, or the changing climate caused by global warming or just a renewed sense of what has meaning in our lives, but there is the sense that the value of the natural world seems to be growing. Some readers will feel that they have always considered our natural world to be of supreme value. Some readers will recognize a renewed sense of responsibility in nurturing our fragile environment and the creatures that share it with us.

The number of organizations supporting our environment is growing.  The number of people participating in these organizations is growing. The Internet is playing an ever-increasing role in communicating information, creating awareness, promoting interest and establishing collaborative networks of support for varying interests. The Internet provides a path of least resistance for grass-roots organizations to mobilize.  It is changing the way we communicate and bringing a new meaning to our sense of community.  The community of people involved in the protection of our natural world is vast and the Internet is the facilitator. The Internet is having such an impact that it is in the running for the Nobel Peace Prize (read more).

An unusual use of the Internet is advertiser paid assistance to save the rain forest.  The Rain Forest Site asks that you click on a link and a sponsor will help pay for the saving of 11.4 square feet of rain forest. Why? Rainforests are some of the world's most ancient and complex ecosystems. They cover a mere 2% of the Earth, yet more than half of all plant and animal species live there.

Have you noticed a change around you - in yourself?  Have you recently become involved in an organization that supports our natural world?  If not, here are some of the thousands of options available to you.  Awareness costs nothing.

common purpose.  You will hear me speak of this more and more as time goes on.  It is something I am quite passionate about for many reasons.

I have been working for more than a year on determining the most effective way for like-minded people to conspire together - regardless of differences - for a common purpose.  That purpose might be planning a meeting or event, brainstorming an idea, building a business, creating a program, clarifying a concept, guiding a group, advancing a  view, educating a class or just plain having a conversation.

Creating software that accomplishes this is daunting but the breadth and scope of the Internet has reached a point where multimedia communication can be shared by many people in real-time.  The ability to customize groupware is available today. It allows groups of people to organize, conspire and communicate as a community. I am not talking about Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn.  They are great for general networking and broadcasting, but not of particular use for a group of individuals working towards a focused objective regardless of size.  For this group, there are tools more powerful, more comprehensive and more functional.   Tools that enable people to work together as-if they were sharing the same table, as-if they were sharing the same desktop, as-if they were in the same space.

Your task for the moment is to consider who and what.  With whom would you choose to conspire? What  goals would you like to achieve? Do you have more than one contact sphere and more than one objective?  Do you have a business goal you are looking to achieve? Do you also have a personal goal you are trying to reach?

If we were to look at the spokes of a collaborative wheel, we would see awareness, motivation, participation, mediation, meditation, reflection, synchronization, engagement and reciprocity. Think what you might accomplish if you were presented with a different way to work with the team of people around you.  Ponder the possibilities if you were able to arrange and focus your communication differently.  Consider the power and potential of having many people working towards the same goal - your goal.

Think of a composition performed by a symphony orchestra.  Consider you are setting out to create a symphony and you have selected your musicians to help you create that composition, and now it is time to work together. Where will you work?

Stay tuned. Your symphony hall is under construction.
