The Future of Social Networking
Social networking is here to stay and it's getting smarter. It will be tied to location, status, associates, trends, content and more.
Warning! Be social, but be respectful and always be smart. Use the Keep it Simple Rule: Do not publish in any form, in any context, via any medium information which would embarrass or offend any inhabitant of planet earth. That includes you! Is that global enough for you? No kidding. This is serious stuff. Respect it. Consider creating a social media policy for you and your workplace. Include specific rules you and your staff must follow to protect yourself, your company and your image. For all mediums including Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn and dozens more; you might set up a personal page and a business page unless the merging of personal and business does not represent an intrusion into your (the term "your" would also include your family, friends, neighbors, etc.) personal privacy. But, when you think about it, use the keep it simple rule (above). Just think about the possibilities. Possibilities for you and your contact sphere, your business, the organizations you value. Social networks can change the course of your business, but they also change the course of our life here on earth. Look at six degrees, takingitglobal, Wiser Earth, or OneClimate.Net and you will see that social networks are having a beneficial impact on our lives - and this is only the beginning. Hold on to your seat, this is going to be... |
Blogs Blogs are extended articles of text including commentaries and news. They are published by the author for personal and/or business use. They might focus on a person, a company, a style, a media type, a thing or a genre. Blogs pass information from one to many. As such, they are an important part of communication and therefore marketing. They are also very helpful. If you want to learn more about my company, read my blog. It will tell you about my company, myself and things that are important to me. If you want to learn more about Richard Branson and the Virgin Companies, read Richard's blog. All companies and sole proprietors' should create and regularly maintain a blog. It helps drive people to your web site as your web site should drive people to your blog. It rounds out your long term information offering. Best advice is consistency. Blog often or don't blog at all. You either have something to say or you don't. If you market your services, then you should have something to say. If you have a brand, then you need to define it. Always!

Microblogs are small bursts of information broadcast to your listeners, friends and associates.
Twitter is one of the most popular examples of a microblog. Twitter accommodates 140 characters of information to be broadcast to followers. Most think of Twitter as something used only for personal use. Not so! I use it to hear about specific company trends. For example, I follow Google Wave on Twitter along with 43,000 others to see what is new with this pretty remarkable - yet infant offering. I follow Venmo to see how money is exchanged using Twitter. I also follow OpenText and Microsoft SharePoint to see what's new in the collaboration front.
Microblogging has been added as a feature to Facebook and LinkedIn.You will also see that cross-fertilization is becoming commonplace. Add a status update on Twitter and you can have it shown on FaceBook instantly.
It all goes to marketing your brand. Are you always coming up with new opportunities, new ways of dealing with old problems, new features in your already hefty list of features. Let everyone know quickly and reference back to your blog, newsletter or website for more information. Using a microblog helps you cross pollinate your information - your brand. |
