Greetings!
First time readers, welcome! Returning readers, welcome back! I am in the middle of a fantastic 16 day respite and feeling foot-loose and fancy-free. I wanted to share the feeling so this issue may be a bit more transcendental than usual. We do not want to waste your time. Articles will contain generally less than 250 words. Please have a look and give us your feedback.
By all means, forward to a friend using the link at the bottom of the Newsletter. Thanks. Questions? Email me at rmj@trif.com |

Sabbatical, vacation, rest, hiatus, retreat, or time of healing. Whatever you call it, it is as essential as sleep. It heals the brain, invigorates the body, calms the nerves and regenerates the imagination.
Recharging is Good for the Soul |
A vacation is better understood in Europe and South America. It is not uncommon for a European to three to siz weeks off every year. Italy leads the charts with an average of 42 paid vacation days with France close behind with 37. The United States drops in at a staggering 13 days. What does this say about our values and our understanding of the human psyche?
It took me a long time to recognize the value of getting away. It's huge. If you aren't finding a way to escape, make different decisions. If you aren't experiencing days with nature, make different decisions. If you aren't enjoying sunrise or sunset or rushing water or cresting waves, make different decisions. Life is very, very short. Frankly, it's almost over. So take time to see, hear, smell and feel a different place.
Have a look at this video to get a different perspective. Stefan Sagmeister closes his office down every 7 years for a year-long sabbatical.
Think about making different decisions and what possibilities that might bring to your life. |
Why Creativity Is So Important What is to become of us? How many of us ponder this? Some believe we are here to experience and enjoy. Many others see our existence as a mission, a rite of passage. Others contend that we live long after we perish and this is merely a stepping stone. Yet others only think of day-to-day survival. Few of us consider the moment - at the moment. Too much going on, too many distractions. The truth be told, we will never know what is to become of us. We may have beliefs. Some may have true faith. But our legacy lives in our souls, in our hearts and in the clouds of our mind. It is but one reason why creativity is so important. We need to create to express what is inside and to put it on display. It helps us leave a bit of us behind. We also need to create to be in the moment, to listen - not to the sound but the soul. Just the act of creating, by definition, brings something into existence that did not exist before. It isn't just what is being created that is brought to life, it is your understanding of the experience that is also brought to life. The simple act of creating is all you need to begin experiencing now, i.e., the Now. Not creative? Take a look at the book On Becoming an Artist, by Ellen J. Langer. She will convince you that you are an artist. Everyone is. You can create beautiful things. You won't think so at first, but you will learn to enjoy the process. It will help you learn about you. It will help you see inside. Creating is good for the soul. What will you create today?

This is the theme at Disney World. You see it in the parades, the signs, the cups, even the napkins. I thought it was significant enough to cover here for a couple of reasons. The first is that Walt Disney left a legacy unlike any other. It is a legacy of possibility and imagination, history and vision. It isn't just hype. It isn't just a corporate philosophy. It's a way of life promoted by every Disney employee and appreciated by almost all visitors to Disney property. It comes down to the vision Walt had from the very beginning. It was "to make people happy". There is something to be said for the level of customer service experienced when on Disney property. At no other place in the world is customer service so extraordinary. It all comes down to the people and how they execute on the vision. At Walt Disney World, they execute quite well.
We can all take a lesson. Having a clear vision and executing on that vision in every aspect of business will make all the difference.
The other reason to mention Disney and the theme Celebrate Today, is just that; Celebrate Today. What a great idea. It feels good. It's contagious. It spreads from person to person - like laughter. And it's all part of making people happy, so it furthers the vision. So take a lesson from Walt, Celebrate Today. I am! |
