Marty, The Richest Man in Town
I just read a book about a guy named Marty who worked at Wal-Mart in South Dakota. The book, The Richest Man in Town by VJ Smith. Why? Good question. Hard to believe, but Marty changed people's lives. A lot of people. He was inspiring, yet simple; motivating, yet common. Rich in life, yet poor in money. We can all take some guidance from Marty.
It is a quick read - less than two hours and worth every moment. It will make your feelings swell, and may change your outlook on life completely. If you have a moment, take a look at this 2 ½ minute YouTube video on The Richest Man in Town. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57PiXLrSfps

Google on Collaboration Mark my Words - It Sizzles
I have been looking closely at collaboration software tools recently. Why? Because I am interested in working with people when those people are not in front of me. By working, I mean having a conversation, exchanging documents, pictures or videos, viewing real-time video, editing a document TOGETHER, drawing on a white board TOGETHER and thereby thinking TOGETHER. Google is working on the problem.
Google describes it like this;
Google Wave is a product that helps users communicate and collaborate on the web. A "wave" is equal parts conversation and document, where users can almost instantly communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more. Google Wave is also a platform with a rich set of open APIs that allow developers to embed waves in other web services and to build extensions that work inside waves. A wave is equal parts conversation and document. People can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more. A wave is shared. Any participant can reply anywhere in the message, edit the content and add participants at any point in the process. Then playback lets anyone rewind the wave to see who said what and when. A wave is live. With live transmission as you type, participants on a wave can have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real-time.
These pale by comparison to the product Google is about to introduce. Stand by... |
Software for Your Brain
Yes, another iPhone app. iThoughts is the best thought recorder, mind mapping, organizational tool I have tried and I have tried a few. So what is a mind mapping tool? It is a tool that let's you create a graphical outline of projects, tasks or goals. It lets you think and record what you think so you can forget about it for the moment and move on. Wikipedia defines it this way: A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea. Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid in study, organization, problem solving, decision making, and writing.
By presenting ideas in a radial, graphical, non-linear manner, mind maps encourage a brainstorming approach to planning and organizational tasks. Though the branches of a mind map represent hierarchical tree structures, their radial arrangement disrupts the prioritizing of concepts typically associated with hierarchies presented with more linear visual cues. This orientation towards brainstorming encourages users to enumerate and connect concepts without a tendency to begin within a particular conceptual framework.
It has an extravagant price tag ($7.99) relative to other App Store offerings but it really does help you organize your thoughts. You will find yourself jumping from category to category adding and adjusting your entries. Easily cut and paste ideas from one place to another. Email the mind map to yourself and it converts the image to an easy to read outline. A great tool for managing business and life goals. | |
