Big Brother May Be Watching...

Have you considered monitoring web usage by your employees?  Have you ever wondered what sites were being accessed, what files were being downloaded or what searches were being performed?  You might consider web monitoring software which sits between your firewall and your users.  You are able to monitor web sites visited, online searches, instant messaging, keystrokes typed, files transferred, documents saved, screen snapshots and chat sessions.  With some programs you are also able to control access.

Here are some options for you to review:

Google Grants

Google is providing $5,000 grants to people who create new Gadgets for Google.  Of course, Google reserves the right to choose which gadgets they want. What are Gadgets?  Gadgets are small web applications that run on multiple sites, including iGoogle, orkut, Google Desktop, and thousands of sites all over the web that use Gadgets for Your Webpage. Gadgets are written in a module language using XML that wraps HTML and JavaScript. Gadgets are simply externally hosted XML files or programs. They can be stored anywhere that normal web sites can be hosted. Google offers free hosting services you can use to host your gadgets.

Socially Responsible Business and the Webocracy

In an essay, Socially Responsible Business and Non-Adversarial Politics, Corinne McLaughlin discusses an undocumented trend in world culture.  Corinne is Executive Director of The Center for Visionary Leadership based in the Washington, D.C .and San Francisco Bay areas and coordinated a national task force for President Clinton's Council on Sustainable Development.  She suggests there is increased power in the independent sector or civil society. Much of this is made possible by the Internet and what she refers to as the new "Webocracy".   She also cites increased attention to spiritual values in a business context including integrity, honesty, fairness, accountability, quality, cooperation, trustworthiness, respect and service. But then again, you won't find any American financial institution in Fortune Magazine's top 10 most socially responsible companies.

Paul Hawken (author of Blessed Unrest) has documented one million or more citizen activist groups worldwide which will be the basis of the new "Webocracy". He suggests that these groups are humanity's immune response to heal the political disease, economic infection and ecological corruption caused by the "profit first and foremost" ideology.
So what is the tool of the new "Webocracy"?  You guessed it, the Internet. And sites like www.moveon.org, www.dig.com, www.dailykos.com, www.mobilevoter.com, www.myspace.com, www.youtube.com, www.facebook.com, www.twitter.com,  and www.delicious.com, all play a part along with a million other independent sites.
Are big changes coming?
